Impacts of fees must fall

The fees must fall protest had impacted both negatively and positively. The positive results on the protests is that it was trending on social media and fortunate enough, people majority of public supported it because everyone was talking about it, justifying by the fact that everyone has a right to education. That made it possible for president Zuma to announce that will be 0% increase on University fees. Then the negative results is that the properties of some universities were vandalized by angry students and also the classes, exams, and registrations were disrupted Read more.

Response from different brands

How brands responded? Well some university SRCs issued a list of demand relate to fighting students exclusion, clearing of debts which prevents students from graduating and registering. Universities advised online and set up telephonic registration process for certain courses. The statement from Wits University, stated that they urge students not to disrupt the registration process Read more.

Minister Blade Nzimande said that the government will help to fund the university system and the other one marked for NSFAS, then also to cover the 0% increase. He also made a joke that students must fall which ended up trending on social media and on YouTube, but he apologized for that. Adam Habib the Vice-Chancellor of Wits University said that he is concerned about impending increases. The University of Johannesburg Vice-Chancellor Ihron Rensburg donated on the fundraising of 31 million made by the university Read more.

My Opinion

Twitter comments
With regards to the response by the various brands mentioned, I personally think that the fees must fall campaign was not a bad idea at all, because now students who were not affording registration fees managed to study at their institutions without having to worry and NSFAS has approved a large number of students. President Zuma was fair when he said there will be 0% increase. The vandalizing of university properties was not a good idea because it will cost the university and that will make it to increase fees again Read more.

                                                   Recommendations

What I would recommend is that: Whenever Universities see the need of increasing fees, they must consider the less fortunate students. Mr.Blade Nzimande must be careful of his jokes in front of media people and he must always keep his promises. Students should not vandalize the properties or disrupt exams whenever they protest Read more.

  2. That's true Milca, but I doubt it will be possible for fees to fall just like that. Let's just be grateful they gave us 0% increase.

  4. yes, most of the students want free education but as long as leaders are still found communicating the idea that it is impossible to get something for free.i think for now We should just be happy with the fact that there wasn't any increment for university fees this year.

  5. We all have the right to Education and it is the responsibility of our government to ensure that they put in enough funds so that the less fortunate can go to University as fees are to high for the poor, and it is going to be difficult t break the cycle of poverty without any degree or diploma.

  6. its true that fees must fall for many students have dropped out of school due to high educational fees. we need more people in school to decrease the level of crime rate in south Africa and develop the country's nation.

    1. Yes true, but free education maybe if it was possible I was gonna say let it be for deserving students (less unfortunate).

  7. I am with you 110 percent. When ever they feel need to increase the fees they must consider the less fortunate. Not forgetting students that are too rich to qualify for NSFAS and too poor to pay for their tuition fees.

    1. Exactly Calvin, because the increasing of fees leads to students dropping out of school, because parents are no longer affording to pay extra costs.

  8. Hi Busisiwe loved your blog. you know because of the people who were supporting the movement not just students but celebrities too, people from the cabinet had no choice but to take the movement seriously and give it the much needed attention it required which led to a 0% increase in fees.

    1. Yes Shadrack that is reasonable, but it is impossible that's the fact, unless there will be fundraising taking place whereby celebrities and other brands contribute to help those students.

  10. Students are our future listening to their cries should be a priority. Not ignore them , get them tortured and gassed by police because they want what's right

    1. That was an unfair behavior done by police officers, because students were fighting for the fees to fall and nothing is wrong with that.
